Training in radiation ecotoxicology in Obninsk city

May 9 through 25, 2025, K. Minkenova, Team leader of the Cytogenetic Research Group at the Laboratory of Biodosimetric Research of the IRSE of the NNC RK, completed a training at the All-Russian Research Institute of Radiology and Agroecology (Obninsk city, Russia). The training was conducted in the Laboratory of Radiobiology and Ecotoxicology of agricultural plants under the supervision of Doctor of Biology, Professor S. Geraskin. Specialization of this laboratory is the use of high-performance techniques of molecular biology to study the mechanisms of adaptation of plant populations to levels of man-made contamination, to study the molecular responses of plants to ionizing radiation, heavy metals and formation regularities of biological effects of low doses. During the training, modern techniques for determining markers of oxidative stress in plants, as well as for quantitative assessment of low-molecular-weight antioxidants and the activity of antioxidant enzymes were mastered. The gained knowledge and skills will contribute to the development of prospects in the field of radiation ecology and molecular genetics of plants in Kazakhstan, and will also be applied in ongoing projects of the IRSE NNC RK.
