In keeping with tradition, an “Open Day” event was launched in the exhibition hall of the Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) in the run-up to the International Day Against Nuclear Tests and on the eve of the 35th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk Test Site. The National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan organized guided tours in three languages. The exhibition hall features a display of authentic artifacts and scientific documents. The collection comprises approximately 100 items.
An open house at the STS Exhibition Hall is always a big celebration. During this event, visitors can view the exhibits and learn about the history of SIP. A video presentation showing explosions and the first-generation AP2 program controller, manufactured in 1955, drew the most interest from adults and children alike. Some visitors were amazed by the AKS-II-1000 long-focus movie camera, which was designed for large-scale filming of experimental work and can shoot up to one million frames per second. The room housing the study of Igor Vasilyevich Kurchatov, an exceptional experimental physicist and architect of atomic power, also attracted considerable attention.
Due to the high demand for visits to the STS History Exhibition Hall, we will continue holding open house events annually. We look forward to welcoming visitors next year who will have an unforgettable experience through what they see and hear. Memory is a shield that prevents the past from becoming our future.
