Radiation monitoring of Semipalatinsk Nuclear Safety Zone

In March 2025, the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NNC RK) began field work in the former Semipalatinsk Test Site area. Experts from the Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology (IRSE NNC RK) organized field visits to monitoring posts along the boundary of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Safety Zone (SNSZ) to take environmental samples. Air aerosol sampling at the work site, purging and dewatering of observation boreholes with groundwater sampling were carried out. The collected samples are sent for laboratory tests. Radiation monitoring of the SNSZ has been carried out on a regular basis since 2022. The goal is to control the power levels of an equivalent dose of gamma radiation, control the content of man-made radionuclides in surface and groundwater, air, soil and vegetation to assess the radiation situation at the boundary of radiation-hazardous areas.
