Еhe British Center of Nuclear and Electric Power hosted a technical meeting ‘Strategy and tools to determine characteristics of land contamination’

October 7 through 11, 2019 the British Center of Nuclear and Electric Power in Dounreay located 9 miles from Thurso city (Great Britain) with support of IAEA hosted a technical meeting ‘Strategy and tools to determine characteristics of land contamination’. Currently, Dounreay that includes fast-neutron nuclear and electric power facilities is acknowledged to be one of the most complicated projects on shutting down nuclear facilities related to decontamination and demolition of a great number of radioactive sites. On behalf of The ‘Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology’ RSE ‘NNC RK’ the meeting was attended by a head of laboratory of physical and chemical research, Department of Comprehensive Ecosystem Research (DCER), Alua Kabdyrakova delivering a presentation ‘Assessment of applicability of some potential remediation technologies to radioactively contaminated areas of STS’ and a lead of research data analysis team, Department of Radiation Research and Ecosystem Restoration (DRRER), Yuliya Baklanova delivering a presentation ‘Pedestrian gamma-spectrometric survey as an optimal technique to identify surface contamination’. Institute’s staff members participated in the practical exercise on the monitoring of the North Sea coast by vehicle gamma-spectrometric survey by means of NaI(Tl), scintillation detectors, visited a low-active waste storage facility (sodium used as  a coolant in the fast-neutron reactor) as well as the prototype of a PFR fast reactor. In total, the event was attended by over 50 scientists and specialists from 26 countries. In the course of discussion, issues of environmental characterization and monitoring, remediation of land exposed to radionuclide contamination and others were addressed.
